We welcome you from Cervantes School in Vila-real (Spain). It is a city of around 50.000 thousand inhabitants well-known by its tile industries as for its first division football team. The city is located in the Valencian Community, an easter region by the Mediterranean sea. Vila-real is sited 6km from Castelló (the capital of the province) and 60km from Valencia (the capital of the autonomous community). The neighborhood where the school is located offers many facilities from which we benefit: swimming pools, basketball courts, theaters, museums, etc.
We are one of the schools with the most history and tradition in our city, since our center was inaugurated in 1932. During these 90 years of life, many people have passed through our facilities, both teachers and students, thus helping to forge, with our values, the identity of a large part of Vila-Real’s society.
In Vila-real the standard of living is medium, there is security and there is no social marginalization. Unemployment rates are low. In recent years immigration has increased. The major immigration groups came from Eastern Europe (Romania and Ukraine) and also from Morocco. In our school we have a percentage of students of these nationalities. In addition, we participate with an educational program with the Romanian government for which we have a Romanian teacher who teaches a weekly lesson to a group of 15 students of Romanian origin.
After various changes throughout our life as a center, we currently have two different buildings, one for nursery education and the other for primary, both fully equipped in terms of infrastructure and staff, which is almost entirely definitive. The school has a total of 450 students. The center’s staff is made up of 12 primary teachers, 8 pre-primary teachers, 2 PE teachers, 2 English teachers, 1 Therapeutic Pedagogy teacher, 1 Music teacher, 1 Religion teacher and 1 Hearing and Speech teacher.
On the other hand, we are a pioneer center both in mediation (since the 2016/17 academic year) and in coeducation, with the project of coeducational playgrounds since last year and with the participation in the ‘Coeducacentros’ network from the upcoming courses. Likewise, our educational project focuses on active methodologies, emotional intelligence and successful educational actions endorsed by the international scientific community. We also consider fundamental pillars in the integral education of our students the emotional education, music (with a school orchestra project) and sports, being the school with the most participation in the entire town.
Other programs that we develop at our school are:
– A Reading plan with a center library, a library at the playground and a classroom library.
– Successful Educational Activities: dialogic literacy groups and interactive groups.
– Cooperative learning: projects, research groups and peer tutoring.
– Our bilingual education program is: Multilingual and Intercultural.
Finally, we are a school opened to international education. We are proud to participate in this Eramus+ project which is the second for our center. We were the coordinators for the project “School and Parents; Partnership for a sustainable education ” with our partners from Romania and Lithuania during the 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 academic years
